Navigating Hybrid Learning: The Aftermath of COVID

According to data from the National Assessment of Educational Progress, significant declines in math and reading scores occurred among 9-year-old American students during the COVID pandemic.

From 2020 to 2022, online learning took over most of the country. The drop in scores was seen most strongly among students who were already struggling in the classroom. The ones who suffered the most were those without easy access to technology, help from a trusted teacher, or a quiet workspace.

Though most students are back in the classroom, education has been forever changed by COVID. Many schools still use an integrated format of online and in class learning. If your child is struggling with online learning, here are some helpful tips:

  1. Maintain contact with your child’s teacher. Check in through the online learning platform regularly and have the teacher’s email on hand to use as needed.
  2. Set up a practical home workspace. Make this space separate from the common area as to avoid distractions. Invest in a desk and supportive chair if possible.
  3. Set a fixed learning plan. Create an after school schedule around subjects. For example, choose to focus on writing on Tuesdays, reading on Wednesdays, and math on Thursdays.
  4. Integrate interactive learning resources. There are many websites that turn learning into a game which can help engage your child in a different and fun way. Using education videos can also be helpful for teaching your child content.
  5. Encourage exercise and physical activity. Brain breaks are especially important when sitting and looking at a computer screen for a large portion of the day. Take small breaks through the day to take some deep breaths and/or connect with nature. After school, make plans for your child to do something physical.
  6. Celebrate the wins and encourage feedback. Celebrate your child’s commitment to their education and their learning benchmarks. Ask your child what is working for them and what isn’t and adjust accordingly.

The past 3 years have been an adjustment for everyone, but especially kids in their formative years. Education looks very different now than it did even five years ago. Have grace for yourself and your child as we are collectively moving past the pandemic.
